We love you, baby girl! Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you!! We wish you many more wonderful birthdays!
Much better

The planets must have been perfectly aligned. The weather was good, Jane’s mood was good enough, and we got at least one good shot of every pose I wanted. Good job, Team Browning. Mommy be so proud!
PS. We left the camera on “auto” setting this time (my sister-in-law Jami helped us out again). I checked out a photography book from the library. I’m determined to figure this crap out.
PPS. I used Picnik to edit the photo (Thanks for the suggestion, Sabra!).
PPPS. I cut my bangs at 10 pm last Sunday after seeing how crappy my hair looked in last week’s photos. Does anyone else do stupid stuff like that? I’m in a hair funk…
Wall art
Isn’t this a cute wall?
You wanna know how you could recreate it? With prints from my etsy shop!!! Need help visualizing it? Here you go!!
Just sayin’…!!

Adventures in photography hell
I’ve mentioned more than once that I’m not terribly fond of photography. It’s right up there with Photoshop. I’d probably like them both better if I had proper training. Maybe someday, but for now, I’m self-taught…
I decided this year for Jane’s birthday/our family/our anniversary pictures, I would take them myself (I know, red flag #1). Last year we went to Picture People in the Greenwood Mall, but that location has since closed. I don’t want to pay good photographer prices, but I want better quality than the Walmart photo studio (nothing against WM; we have had a few anniversary photos taken there in the past). I don’t need a ton of good shots, just a couple good ones of Jane, one of our family, and one of me and Chris (and maybe one of just me to replace the crappy one on this website). So what do you do when you can’t find what you’re looking for? You (at least attempt to) DIY.
So we borrowed a camera from Chris’ very generous co-worker Keith. It’s a Nikon something-or-other with, like, four lenses. He brought it home last week, and I had planned our “photo shoot” for this past weekend. The evening he brought it home, we had been grilling out at Mom’s, so I messed around with it so see what I was getting myself into. Here are a couple that I took (with the help of some Photoshop Express):

Not too bad (good enough). If our family photos turn out this good, I’d be pleasantly surprised. At this point I’m thinking, eh, we can pull this off. I could not have been more wrong…
When we woke up Saturday morning (“photo shoot” day), it was overcast (one thing I do know about photography is that you need as much natural light as you can get), and Chris was having some mean allergy issues. But I was still determined that Team Browning could do this thing. Then Jane started whining around because it was nap time (duh, red flag #47, but I thought I push her nap back since we had slept in). And THEN when we headed up to my brother and sister-in-law’s house to take pictures (they live on the hill behind us and have better landscape-y views), it started to sprinkle (red flag #62). But wait! They have a front porch! We can still do this!!
Nope. Here’s the best of the crap we ended up with:

Fail. Big time. I even threw a Hail Mary at the shot above and tried to edit it into something salvageable:
Again, no dice.
Oh well. We tried. Luckily Keith is letting us borrow the camera for another week, so please cross your fingers that our second attempt goes better this weekend…
PS. I’ll take any free advice anyone wants to offer on how the heck to use an SLR. I’m most certainly still at the “push buttons and turn knobs and see what happens” stage.
Guess what I’ve been working on…!

I’m going to try really hard to get it done sooner than last year’s. (Click here to see my desk calendars from the past two years)
Nirvana
Wow. As of Saturday, this album was 20 years old. How is that possible? Am I really no longer in high school? Ok, technically I was in 8th grade when this album came out, but it wasn’t until high school (specifically, after Kurt offed himself) that I really started to consume Nirvana. But for me, it was more than just the music. After I read this book, I started to see life in a different way.

The world got a whole lot bigger. It was proof that there were others who felt like a misfit. I also watched this video over and over again.
And Dave Grohl. I still love Dave Grohl, even though I’m not a huge fan of the Foo Fighters. Is there anyone cooler than him?
So what about you? Were you in any way influenced by Nirvana? Have you too had a decades-long crush on Dave Grohl?
Muppets
Is anyone excited about the new Muppet movie coming out Thanksgiving weekend?
I thought I was until I read this article; now I’m not so sure. It definitely got me thinking about my position on the Muppets (deep stuff, I know). Maybe I’m just excited in a nostalgic kind of way. I’m probably more excited about Jason Segel than anything. I love the Muppets, but will they still be funny to my 33-year-old self? I still watch the older Muppet movies from time to time, but I think what I like about them is that it takes me back to when I was watching them for the first time as a kid. Does that make sense?
Regardless, I’m really excited about are these posters by Michael De Pippo:
Aren’t they amazing? And what are your thoughts on the movie or the Muppets in general?
Photo-Lettering, Inc.
Photo-Lettering, Inc. (“PLINC”) has only recently flown onto my radar. Not only am I pumped about their services (you can have words and small phrases converted into awesome fonts for a small fee without having to buy the entire font), I’m also totally pumped about the free catalog I got in the mail! Here are the highlights:

I also now get fun little emails from them that say stuff like this:
PLINC is partly owned by the font foundry House Industries. I highly recommend checking out both websites if font-y goodness interests you. And if you sign up for an account, you immediately get one free setting and the option to be mailed a free catalog. Once you receive the catalog, you get two more free settings. I’ve used one of the three so far, just to see how it works…

…but I’m hoarding the other two until I decide how I want to use them. Decisions, decisions…!
Note cards!!!
‘Member these?
They’re in my etsy shop now! Yay!
Feel free to give me mad props on my Photoshop skills, yo. It took me FOREVER to figure out how to pretty up my product photos. Don’t believe me? Here’s one of the photos I started with:
If I factored in Photoshop time to my retail price, each card would cost about $300 or so. Now with this off my back, I go to bed…
PS. Is “notecard” really not a word? I keep getting spell-checked on it. I’ve probably been spelling it wrong for years along with “alot”. GAC.
PPS. I check my blog spam filter every few days to make sure that no legit comments have gotten stuck. Most of the spam is written in Polish or wants me to buy Viagra. I found one tonight that referenced “police academy movie”. Made me chuckle. And think of Bubba Smith.
PPPS. Whoa! Bubba Smith died last month? Where have I been?
Thank God It’s Friday
Busy week. Not much time for blogging.
But hopefully this print will get you through the weekend:

Looking at it makes me happy. Enjoy your weekend!
Veggies and fruit
I don’t like to eat them, but I sure like to look at them (especially in my kitchen). Here’s some fun ones I’ve found recently:
Tea towel by Lotta Kuhlhorn
Slow Food Fest poster (I do not approve of the main font. It looks like they’re hosting an earthquake.)
Cute little food brochure I picked up at the Starbucks in Target (Fun fact: I never visit Starbucks on purpose. I think I had just pulled my cart into one because Jane was on the verge of a meltdown. Coffee is gross.)
New design
Would you hang this on your wall? I probably will…
PS. I see an upside down cupcake with blue icing. What do you see?
Justice of the peace
Hi. I haven’t posted much lately. I’m going to throw Jane Browning under the bus on this one. She has been difficult/clingy/high-maintenance-y/scream-y with a side of chatty adorableness. All in all, a handful. Keeping her occupied has certainly been a tag-team effort. Chris and I agree that if we lived in an apartment, we’d surely be evicted for violating the noise-level ordinance. Thankfully, the boonies are ordinance free…
So, I have a lot of things to talk about! See this guy?

Yeah, he married us almost 6 years ago:
Apparently he has appeared on a recent episode of Bridezillas and, subsequently, an episode of The Soup (watch the video to about the 58 second mark):
Class act, right? I can’t say I’m surprised. He was kind of a d-bag. One of my cousins dubbed him “J.P. Funnymaker” because he kept making stupid jokes. Oh well, he got the job done, I suppose…!
(For anyone who might be in the market for a good WordPress video plugin, I recommend this one. I actually wrote this post a few days ago but was having a hell of a time trying to get the video to embed.)
More thoughts of yours truly
I’m sensing that this may become a recurring feature on this blog. Lucky me, I continue to receive emails and texts from people I know sending me pictures and links of things that remind them of me! So flattering!
First up is a link to a potty chair from Katie (of macrame wine-holder fame [she hosted said playdate]). She said, “Okay Jill, here’s my first “This made me think of you”… It’s a little more modern than mid-century like many of the things you post in your blog, but I thought you might like the sleek lines. Plus, it’s a potty, how timely! (I don’t know about making a potty part of the design of a bathroom, but…)”
I know, most people wouldn’t be flattered by a potty chair, but I was. It’s a good-looking potty chair:

Unfortunately, I had already bought Jane a potty chair that’s not nearly as cute, but don’t think I didn’t buy one that coordinates with the rest of the bathroom. Because I did. (Disclaimer: the original link Katie sent me was to the blue version of the above potty chair, but it’s no longer available so I found a link to the red version.) Thanks, Katie!!
Next up are some stamps you may all have seen before that are currently available at the post office:

My cousin Amanda texted me this picture and said, “saw these stamps and thought of u….very retro cool:)”. I’m guessing she had already used the first four stamps when she took the picture, so here’s a better picture so you can see the retro-coolness in more detail:

I’ve been meaning to get some before they sell out, but I’m not in the P.O. very often. I think I’ll just order some from the website here directly. Thanks, Manda!
And last is a link that was emailed to me from my mother-in-law Bonnie of a slideshow of “Strange Buildings Around the Country“:

I personally can’t stop giggling over the “most read” headlines in the bottom right corner. I’m trying really hard not to click on them myself! Ohio, you should be so proud… But anyway, it is an interesting slideshow. This is my favorite one:

Thanks, Bonnie!
So a potty chair, some retro stamps, and weird buildings… Yep, that about sums me up!!!
Busy worker bee
I’ve been busy working outside the past few evenings (instead of inside blogging where I’d prefer to be). Manual labor/physical activity/blisters-and-back-pain isn’t my thing, but the yard isn’t going to pre-landscape itself. I say “pre” because we’ve not even planted anything yet. My dad and I have slowly been moving dirt from under the deck to the front of the house in preparation of future landscaping.
Here’s a before picture (from the time I entered a contest):

And here’s the progress we’ve made so far:
Yeah, it doesn’t look like much, but it’s been A LOT of work. And it turns out I’m going to have to learn to love shrubs because the planter box I want won’t be feasible since the siding slopes at the end. And since there will be no planter box, there needs to be more dirt in its place. I guess I could have pushed the issue and had Dad remove some of the siding, but with him you have to pick your battles…
Here’s a before picture of the “courtyard” (sounds fancy, huh?):

And here’s an in-progress picture:

It looks like an awesomely big litter box, right? The dirt we are digging out is next to the foundation where pea gravel was poured for drainage purposes. So part of what we are digging up is dirt and part is gravel. Lucky for me, the gravel is easier to shovel than dirt, and I just so happened to want my courtyard filled with gravel anyway.
Here’s a picture of the damage we’ve done under the deck so far:

Eventually we will build a retaining wall and pour a concrete floor so we can use this space as storage for either the grill (ours is still next door at Mom & Dad’s) or our own riding lawn mower in the future (we currently have a communal one that is having a hard time keeping up with 6+ acres).
So what do I plan to do when the dirt is all moved? First of all, plant grass!! It looks like a bunch of hobos live here! Then we will probably plant some shrubs in the front. I’m leaning towards Golden Vicary (but we would buy them cheaply as tiny baby shrubs):

I think the yellowy/lime green color would look good up against our green siding. And I’m a little sentimental towards them because we had them in front of Mom & Dad’s house growing up. I’d also maybe like to work in some Arborvitae to add some height and contrast (and because that’s what makes up the privacy hedge in front of the Irwin Miller house
):

I’m all for keeping things looking neat and tidy, so of course we will want to put up some edging in front of the shrubs. I’m liking the looks of this one:

And possibly even this one, just for something different:

I plan on putting these flower pots in the courtyard (please note that there are three symbolizing Chris, Jill, and Jane
):

And I recently bought these two new pots (orange one, red one [they were on sale last week at Home Depot])…

… to go with these two that I already had…

… which will all land up somewhere on the porch. I’m thinking I need to have Chris Browning build me some kind of cool plant stand… hmm….
So any ideas on what I should actually plant in these pots next spring? I would like something low maintenance with a lot of color, but it needs to know its role and not be unruly like petunias. I don’t want a jungle on my front porch. Suggestions??
PS. And I still want an orange front door!!
Uneasiness
Something is bothering me. I’ve been trying for the past few days to figure out how to discuss it without offending anyone (don’t worry, most of you won’t be offended or even care for that matter).
I shared this lovely little blog header with you a while back:

And then I was on Pinterest and saw this:

My mind immediately connected the two. Now, most people would notice their similarities and move on. But in my graphically-designed mind, there are sirens and horns and flashing warning lights going off. Why? Because one of these is an original design and one is not. So which came first? I decided to find out.
Upon doing some research, I found that the blog header was designed by Leigh-Ann from Freckled Nest. The concert poster was designed by Dan Padavic from Vahalla Studios. I also found that Leigh-Ann had pinned Dan’s concert poster to her Pinterest account, so I knew she was aware of it. So I contacted her to get a clear picture of why these two designs are so much alike. Here was her response:
Hi Jill,
Ok, so that clears up which came first (for the record, I did not contact Dan because I didn’t feel it was my place to stir the proverbial pot since I had gotten my answer from Leigh-Ann). But that doesn’t clear up my reaction to it. My 1st reaction: rip-off. My 2nd reaction: I appreciate the fact that she admitted her inspiration. 3rd reaction: I really like Leigh-Ann’s blog/ she seems like a nice person/ I could probably be friends with her/ she shares my love of station wagons. 4th reaction: Grr… why did I have to see that stupid (beautiful) poster.
New couples shower invitation

This is a recent couples shower invitation I designed. I had originally presented this design to the bride (my friend and fellow card club member!) as one of two options for her wedding invitation. She later decided to move away from the circle theme, so we modified the other design I made for her (I’ll show you that design and the finished product in a later post). I was also asked to create her couples shower invitation, for which we ended up using this design.
The digital file is now available for purchase in my etsy shop.
Trash curtain
Yeah, we’re that fancy. We now have a curtain that hides our trash can. Definitely not something you see every day, unless you live at our house…

Let me start by saying that for as long as Chris and I have lived together, we have had this big green trash can in our kitchen (Chris brought it to the relationship; not sure of its origins [I'm beginning to feel like I have too many inanimate "children" {see also couch and Tivo}]). Since we’re so compatible, we both agreed that small kitchen trash cans are for the birds. They require too much maintenance (aka changing of the trash bag), and they usually get stuck under a sink or in a closet where they start stinking up the place. But we’ll have none of that. In our previous residences, we’ve let them hang out in the wide open so they can feel like part of the family.
Now jump to the building of our home. I insisted on putting the trash can (Chris, why haven’t we named this thing yet?) its proper place in the kitchen. I was more than happy to give up cabinet space so that Old Greenie (yeah? no?) could tuck nicely under the counter. I can’t completely claim this brain child because this was basically the same location of the trash can when we lived in my parents basement, but that was by necessity and not by choice. It just so happened to work out great for us, so it was easy to talk Chris into doing the same thing in our new home.

Strangely enough, it didn’t occur to me to put up a curtain until a few months ago when I attempted (and subsequently failed) to take pictures of the kitchen. I didn’t realize what an eye sore it is until I saw the space on my camera display. Yikes. I briefly thought about painting the trash can and then quickly decided against it. Chris wasn’t completely against the idea of putting up a curtain since I promised him it could stay open unless we had company.

I dug up the remains of a vinyl tablecloth I had used for the wall art above my messy desk:

And here is the condensed version of how I made this silly curtain:

I don’t think I’d be very good at giving tutorials. I lose interest too quickly. So anyway, here’s the finished product:

Ah, much better. And Jane approves as well:

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get the wrinkles out? I laid it out on my deck on a hot afternoon hoping the heat would help, but it didn’t. Oh, well…
Kate Thomas
I absolutely love these images designed by Kate Thomas. I could stare at them all day. I found them on the design work life blog.

These images were part of her self promo piece. You can learn more about her on her blog and her portfolio website.
New wall poster
Here’s a recent picture of our living room:

And here’s a picture of the living room taken this week:

Notice anything different??
Mama got a new wall poster!!

My old Vitra furniture poster was the right size for the space, put it was a bit too busy in relation to its surroundings (it has since found a good home at my cousin Amy’s house).

I was a little unsure of putting up two of the same matted frames on the same wall, but I think they compliment each other nicely:

Both of the framed posters are my designs (the one up higher used to live in my cubicle at work). You can buy 8×10 versions of either one in my etsy shop. I hope to eventually offer posters in my shop as well.
PS. Our couch has seen better days. It’s 8 1/2 years old. It’s like one of our children, along with the Tivo. It was one of our first major purchases when Chris and I moved in together. Where it lacks in style, it makes up in comfort. The day we have to replace it will be a sad day in the Browning house…
PPS. I would have showed you the whole living room, but I needed somewhere to shove the crap from the tidy space you see above.
